Business Overview
A leader in mobile voice and data communication with $14.7 billion annual revenue in 2002, Cingular Wireless is the second largest wireless company in the U.S., serving more than 22 million voice and data customers nationwide.

Cingular’s vision is to simplify the wireless experience for its consumer and business customers by offering easy-to-understand, affordable rate plans and excellent customer service. Moreover, Cingular is a wireless company determined to promote the individual to a new level and to create a personal relationship with each of its customers.

A Familiar HR Challenge
It is no surprise that Cingular wanted to carry its commitment to simplicity and personalization through to its hiring process. Unfortunately, Cingular was struggling with a familiar human resources challenge that kept them from doing just that. The rapidly growing communications company was drowning in paperwork.

“We were in a very non-automated environment,” said John Kurnick, Cingular’s executive director of staffing services. “We did have an electronic job-posting system, but not an electronic tracking system. All we did was post jobs. People could apply for a position, but then the system would spit out résumés that were on paper and we would then route them to our managers. It was all manual. We had a piece of paper for everything.”

Peopleclick Stands Out
Cingular actively sought a fully-automated beginning-to-end solution, says Kurnick. “We wanted to make the staffing process as automated as possible and keep it as simple as possible for our recruiters and applicants.” After careful contemplation, Cingular selected Peopleclick’s market-leading recruitment management system – Peopleclick RMS™ – to help them staff strategically, control costs and eliminate redundant processes as well as the paper.

“Peopleclick provided the flexibility we needed to reconfigure our workflow,” says Kurnick. “Now, we can do numerous things within the system, such as emailing candidates and routing résumés to various people in a very simple fashion electronically. We’re able, from a recruiter’s perspective, to identify a candidate we like and pass that candidate on to a manager without generating paper.”

Web-Based Technology Provides Total Visibility
Using Peopleclick’s recruitment technology, Cingular can automate, track and report on the entire hiring process. The process, says Erik Morse, Peopleclick’s vice president of product strategy, is entirely web-based.

A portal, hosted by Peopleclick, was placed on Cingular’s website. “Recruiters and hiring managers, who often have multiple positions to fill, now have total visibility while job candidates click through the Cingular career site. With access to meaningful workforce data, regional managers, responsible for staffing 5 to 10 Cingular Wireless stores, can make faster and more informed strategic staffing decisions for both new and existing stores,” says Morse.

The system also allows Cingular to set up automated search criteria “to narrow the scope of candidates down to those who have the attributes Cingular is looking for, and have those candidates automatically delivered to them,” Morse notes.

The robust, easy-to-use search capabilities provided by Peopleclick RMS let Cingular drive down the time and cost of building and managing a productive and diverse workforce. Rather than manually wading through the thousands of applications they receive, Cingular uses Peopleclick’s online recruitment technology to quickly and efficiently identify, screen, qualify and communicate with the ideal candidates.

In fact, says Kurnick, “A job-seeker can go through our screening and selection process and ultimately become an employee in a completely automated fashion. We have been able to eliminate nearly 95 percent of the paper.”

Improving Rather than Disrupting Business
By implementing Peopleclick’s fully-automated web-based recruitment management solution, Cingular dramatically reduced the time, expense and man-hours needed to move a job applicant through the hiring process. Even better, Cingular was able to implement Peopleclick’s technology without disrupting their business.

The advantage of using Peopleclick’s process lies in its configurability, says Ginny Gomez, head of Peopleclick's product management and marketing. “We deliver a solution to support the business processes of Cingular in such a way that the practice is adapted to their needs and to their definitions of easy and flexible. We are unique in our ability to provide a product that allows our customers to work the way they want.”

Gomez also points out that having an enterprise-level application that is “born on the web as opposed to turning an application from a client-server model into a web-service model is a big advantage. Not only has our application been
designed and built in a Software-as-a-Service environment, but Peopleclick has the experience, longevity and clientele to support a successful implementation.”
